Post Date:05/02/2019 1:56 PM
smoke alarm installation red crossSouth County Fire teamed up with the Red Cross to install 114 smoke alarms during the past week at four south Snohomish County communities as part of the Red Cross Sound the Alarm campaign.

The installations took place at:

• Maplewood Manor Condominiums, Edmonds.
• Carriage Club Estates Mobile Home Park, unincorporated Everett.
• Royalwood Manor Mobile Home Park, Lynnwood.
• Serene Terrace Mobile Home Park, unincorporated Lynnwood.

Firefighters and volunteers found alarms that had batteries removed or expired alarms more than 10 years old in nearly all the homes they visited. Many residents had no working smoke alarms. Nearly half of these were older adults living alone with significant mobility or memory issues. smoke alarm safety checklist 2019 red cross

South County Fire offers these recommendations for equipping your home with smoke alarms:

• Install smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.

• Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.

• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. They expire and become unreliable.

• Plan and practice a home fire escape plan.
