South County Fire prepares for busy Fourth of July

South County Fire responds to more emergency calls on July Fourth than any other day of the year. 

“We typically see brush fires, structure fires, dumpster fires, and unfortunately injuries related to fireworks,” said Tom Keene, South County Fire Deputy Chief of Operations. “We increase staffing to prepare for the higher call volume.”

In the days surrounding Fourth of July in 2025, firefighters responded to an estimated 16 fireworks-related fires and one fireworks-related medical emergency. An additional 28 fires occurred during the same time period, but their causes could not be determined.

“Especially in a dry year, these fires can spread quickly,” Keene said. “We work proactively to make sure we’re ready.”

Fireworks sales and discharge are illegal in southwest Snohomish County. This includes the cities of Bothell, Brier, Edmonds, Everett, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo and unincorporated southwest Snohomish County.

Everyone is asked to help keep 911 lines open during the holiday. For noise complaints or reporting illegal fireworks, call Snohomish County’s non-emergency number at 425-407-3999.

Residents across southwest Snohomish County have shared that the holiday affects their sense of personal security, with some afraid to leave their homes for fear of a fire. Others must tranquilize pets or manage mental health conditions that can be triggered by loud explosions.

“We ask everyone to consider the impact fireworks can have on neighbors, pets, veterans, and first responders,” said South County Fire Outreach Manager Shawneri Guzman. “Our 911 dispatchers handle a much higher volume of emergency calls during the holiday. We want everyone to enjoy the Fourth safely.”

Free ‘Fireworks Illegal’ Yard Signs Available

While supplies last, residents can pick up free “Fireworks Illegal” yard signs, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the following South County Fire stations:

• Mill Creek Fire Station 76
• Mountlake Terrace Fire Station 19
• Lynnwood Civic Center Station 15
