Protect your home and family from lithium-ion battery fires

Lithium-ion batteries power our lives — but if we’re not careful, they can pose a serious fire risk.

These batteries are commonly found in cell phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, e-bikes and other items.

Protect your home and family from lithium-ion battery fires in three simple steps:

  • BUY SMART: Only buy and use devices, batteries and charging equipment that are listed by a nationally recognized testing lab and labeled accordingly. Only use the battery and charging cord designed for your device.
  • CHARGE SAFELY: Do not charge a device under a pillow, on your bed or on a couch. Do not keep charging the device or battery after it is fully charged.
  • RECYCLE RIGHT: Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the trash. Find a recycling location at https://call2recycle.org

Stop using the battery if you notice these problems: odor, change in color, too much heat, change in shape, leaking or odd noises.

These burned batteries were found after a transfer station fire in Mountlake Terrace in January 2025.
