Chief StedmanThe Snohomish County Fire District 1 Board of Commissioners has named Bruce Stedman as the preferred candidate for the position of Fire Chief.

Stedman, who serves as the chief of the Arlington Fire Department, was one of four finalists selected after a nationwide search. His selection was announced at the board’s meeting Tuesday night.

“Chief Stedman has a distinguished record of service and accomplishments in the fire service. We look forward to the leadership and experience he will be bring to our organization,” said Commissioner Jim Kenny, board vice chair.

The board will now begin negotiating a contract and employment agreement with Stedman.

On Oct. 1, Fire District 1 will consolidate operations with the Lynnwood Fire Department to form a regional fire authority approved by voters on Aug. 1. The district’s new chief will become chief of this new agency, South Snohomish County Fire & Rescue (SSCFR). SSCFR will be the largest fire and emergency medical service provider in the county, serving about 250,000 residents in unincorporated communities, the City of Lynnwood and by contract, the cities of Brier, Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace. Elected officials from all four cities joined Fire District 1 commissioners in the process to select the new chief.

“My wife, Susan, and I are excited about this opportunity. I’m personally humbled and honored by the trust that has been put in me to lead this new organization,” Stedman said.

Stedman has more than 39 years in the fire service. He has been Chief of the Arlington Fire Department since 2010. Prior to that, he served as Chief of the Alhambra Fire Department in California. He has a bachelor’s degree in occupational studies and a master’s degree in emergency services administration, both from California State University, Long Beach.
